Vinyl Windows Part IV - Install Practices for the Best Result

New windows are a big investment, whether in a new home or replacement windows in an existing home. For them to function properly and for as long as possible they need to be installed correctly. Quality Homes & Renovations follows industry best installation practices to ensure you are happy with your investment for many years.

Please note that this is based on a replacement window situation – the steps change only slightly for new construction.

Proper Measurements

A good window installation starts with the correct size windows. Vinyl windows are manufactured to order, so we can match and replace any window in your home. The key to this is making sure the new window fits correctly in the existing rough opening.

Quality Homes & Renovations takes careful measurements to accurately price the new windows, and once you’ve decided to have us install them, the casing is removed to verify these numbers. We don’t stop there however: the measurements are verified again by another employee as proof against any errors. Once the measurements have been double checked the windows are ordered.

Clean & Tidy Workspace

The homeowner has some work to do as well. We ask that you take down any pictures, remove blinds and curtains and make sure there is a clear path to and space around each window. This allows the install crew get straight to work. In turn, our crew members will treat your home with utmost respect, laying down drop sheets and taking every precaution to keep your home clean.

Flashing, Securing & Airsealing

When the crew has set up and checked the new window measurements again, the old window is removed. Sometimes this is straightforward, sometimes it can be like pulling teeth. Regardless, the old window comes out.

The rough opening is cleaned of debris and flashing tape is installed on the sill. This is a self adhering membrane that is sealed to the sill and 6” up the sides of the rough opening and folded over onto the wall. Most rot in a window opening occurs in the sill – this prevents it by creating a waterproof barrier and allowing any water that does enter the rough opening an exit down the wall.

The window is placed in the opening, shimmed level and then shimmed plumb and square. Cedar shims are placed every 16- 24” and screws driven through the window frame into the rough opening through the shims. The crew checks for level and plumb throughout this process and makes sure the window functions properly when it’s complete.

The window is sealed to the framing with spray foam. This needs to be applied carefully so it doesn’t compress the window when it expands and affect function. The shims are cut flush with the wall and the cut ends sealed with caulking to prevent any air leaking through.

Exterior & Interior Finish

Replacement windows are usually capped with colour matched aluminum. This is bent onsite to suit each specific window and caulked to the window and the exterior finish of the home. The interior has new casing installed – this can be a new profile or match the existing casing in your home.

Clean Up

When the install is complete our crew will clean up both inside and out, vacuuming and doing their best to leave your home just as they found out. This is also the perfect time to ask questions about your new vinyl windows, including tips on maintenance and operation.
